At this point, you cannot wait to make an offer. Before you lock down, it’s probably wise to talk to a neighbor or two. Remember that the community you anticipate to live in will determine your safety and comfort. The best way to get first-hand information is to talk a neighbor.

1. How would you describe this area, and how’s it like living here?

This is a very open-ended question that will leave a big allowance for the neighbor to pour out his or her heart. In most cases, they will mention the thing that stands out in the area. It can be something they love or hate. Although real estate agents are limited with regards to the information they can say about a neighborhood, neighbors are not restricted. Therefore, they will give you realistic information that could make you go for the deal or leave it.

2. If you had the chance to change something about this neighborhood, what would it be?

At this point, you will be asking them about the bad part of the community. The potential neighbor will feel free to tell you about the major drawback of the area. Once you learn about the inconveniences that may come with buying a house in the area, you will make an informed decision.

3. Is there something I should know about this property?

This question will turn attention to the specific home you are considering. Although sellers are supposed to disclose all information to the buyer, not all are sincere. Some might conceal the information they think would discourage you from buying the property. Neighbors love talking, so if the house you are considering has had some problems, they will tell you about it.
